There is a red light indicating when the battery needs replacing (about 2cm behind the wheel). It holds a AA battery and so far using this mouse everyday, and it generally lasts about 6 months. I recommend this if you have small hands or if you're always mobile and you don't like to use your laptop's touch pad. It's very comfortable, I have big hands and I usually hold it with my thumb and fingers rather than place my palm on it. I've had this mouse for about a year now, and ironically only have dropped it twice and it seems durable.
